How true! that ratnam part..that was class touch
am happy that such neat movies are projected….but i wish films like Mahanadhi also were shown…I mean that is another movie that deserves much better than what it has now!
Definitely Mahanadhi was an awesome movie. Then there was “Anbe Sivam”.
In terms of content,i firmly believe Anbe sivam was an amazing piece of art. In this age of mindles capitalism, that movie spoke for compassion for a fellow human being.
The argument continues. Some of my friends think that Nayagan didn’t deserve such a huge honor because a lot of it was taken from God father. I feel that there’s some sense in what they are saying. But in isolation, Nayagan is definitely one of the most complete movies india has ever seen. I think Mani’s biggest contribution to the movie the was his adaptation to an indian audience.
As for Mahanadhi and Anbe sivam, I like both the movies, but somehow it wouldn’t make big news in an international arena. It is inherently difficult for an indian movie to do well in an int’l arena, given our technical shortcomings and vast cultural differences (for eg, if I were brought up in the US, and I saw a whole song for 5 minutes, where the hero and heroine take a break from the purpose of the movie, bring along 20 people and sing a song and dance to the tune, I’d be like “what the hell’s going on here”). I still think the comparison is one of apples and oranges !
Manirathnam is a true gem for our Indian Cinema. He created a seperate style of making cinema. Though his initial attempts didn’t take off, Mouna Raagam ( I think ) showed the world who Mani was and the following movies showed the world his class.
Thanks for the longish comment:-)I have written comments which turned out bigger than the posts and which was not at all to the liking of the author of the post.
But i liked and agree what you have written.
Narayanan Sir,
I could not agree more. I am a big time Mani fan and so you cannot expect anything bad about him from me.
Here’s my best of mani scenes…by no means exhaustive

Nayagan was a class-act.
