There lived a “poor” lady P. Her area too was inundated as was almost every area in the city in the recent rains. But she was not personally affected. No floods entered her home. The Chief Minister of the state, announced flood relief of Rs.2000, a saree and dhoti to all the poor who had been badly affected because of floods.
This “poor” lady promptly took out her ration card, ordered her maid servant to stand in Q in the ration shop, got her token and on day 1 of relief disbursement, got her quota of Rs. 2000, saree and dhoti.
In a guesture of true magnanimity, she gives the low priced saree and dhoti to maid servant and pockets the 2000 bucks which the government had given.
Blame it on my naiveté. I had all along thought that Rs.2000 was a consolation amount given by the Government to all those who had lost whatever precious little they had in the floods.
I also came to know this is not a one-off incident.
All this raises a question. What kind of a society are we? Is this the kind of values we want the next generation to practice?
I just don’t know.
India remains a poor and developing country because of the beggar mindset of even some of the rich people.
As a man thinketh.

Rs. 2000 is not a joke. It isnt simple money. They say it is there for all the ration card holders (Specific to colors).
imagine the amount was Rs. 20,000. More people would have gone.
It only looks wrong PK, but it isnt.

@ramses

@divya

@keerthi
I dont care what the govt says. but its simply that its meant for ppl who were affected.
if u have not been affected why do u want that money?
This is not meant for u. as simple as that.
What is the difference between this and a govt official who takes a kickback, afterall he too is taking money which is not his?
Think about this, a person who has lost everything gets 2000 and a persn who has a car, bungalow also gets 2000. i dont see any equity here.
i personally thought 2000 for flood relief was pea nuts. Now i know the other side of it.
i mean if the govt wanted to distribute money to all then its not flood relief its seasonal allowance, why ration card damn it? why cant they simply throw currency notes from a helicopter?

December 26th, 2005 at 11:01 am
@ganesh
this definitely disturbed me..
@monu
Oh yeah.. whats the difference between the govt guy and this lady?its all the same.
what right have we got to crib about corruption?
if what she did was right, it goes to say corruption is our tradition isn’t it?

Sad yet true.!!
Unless people change….its difficult.!
Change has to come from within.

Why not the govt officials go door to door (like they do for Voter ID/ration card issue/checking etc.) and distribute relief materials/money? That case, atleast the officials can see the exact status of the person claiming the relief amount..
December 26th, 2005 at 4:56 pm
Prabhu, u r correct and I find Q’s & Q’s of people standing in Ration shop fighting each other, but for the amount which is not deserved by them.
I found people wearing so much of jewels and well dressed with costly sarees and so on and still waiting fo the money meant for some other !
Also, I think, the Govt., should have been much careful in announcing these schemes.

makkal elam ipdi irundha aprom politicans ai kurai solli enna proyojanam?
@gowri
i agree that the govt could’ve devised a better system. but then for a corrupt society there is no such thing as a fool proof system.
@susubala
spot on.

rightly said PK, even some of my relatives went to get the consolation amount.
i could just lament at their mentality
