This song and its picturisation was a topic of debate 16 years back :) But lyrics … Man, JUST AWESOME LYRICS…

If Kannadhasan is a genius, Vaali is a genius too. Only that with Vaali, you should be careful what you ask, for you might get it:)

Vaali is the wal-mart of Tamil lyricists.

Hey , just wanted to give some good romantic lyrics for the holiday season:)

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL OF YOU!

An ode to icon designers

Thursday, December 22nd, 2005

Graphic Designers will talk with pride about their jazzy flash designs, the latest filters in Adobe Photoshop and the cool gloss effect tutorial they saw in the net. But those who know icon design will never talk about it.

Graphical icons, ubiquitous in GUIs all over the web and thick client applications are a classic case of “Moorthy Sirisu, Keerthi Perisu”. The trouble with icons is that not only it should be attractive but it should also “communicate” clearly to users of different cultures about the functionality which it represents. Add to it some criterias like it should fit neat in a 16 pixel square, should look good but should not distract, and all the icons used in an application should be consistent and look part of the same family; In other words you really have a task cut out. Its like asking “7G” hero Ravi Krishna to act.

All those who think making a layout for 800×600 resolution is cool, try a set of 16 pixel (width and height) reasonably decent looking icons which are not blatant copies.

To all my readers, whenever you type :Ds,:Ps and :)) in your Messenger windows, don’t underestimate the talent and creativity required to come up with such unique yet universally understandable graphics. Just because its available in every window does not mean they are easy to create. Those wonderful graphic designers who can come up with such orignal emoticons and icons sure are really great. I am nowhere near them, but i am improving. This post is a salute to all those great designers.

Yahoo –> Google –> Previewseek?

Wednesday, December 21st, 2005

Got a forward about this new kid on the block.

Previewseek
Not bad at all. What caught my attention was the dynamic left tree menu showcasing the categories. There is also something like ‘Save this link’ (Save where i dont know) and links like ‘More from here’ and ‘More like this’.

Best of all, the search results comes with a thumb-nail screen shot of the webpage.
Looks like the number of readers who might land on this page looking for
‘Karthik Tiffin Center’ or ‘Arvind Swamy Marriage’ will be slightly less in future.

One thing i did not quite like it was its name. I mean ‘Take a leak’ would’ve been more friendly if you ask me. But seriously, a wannabe google competitor should have a name half as hep, sticky or cool as google or yahoo. Previewseek looks straight out of a GRE/GMAT/CAT preparatory guide. Chances of me making a typo while typing url and then verifying that address in Google is not all that low.

On the whole i would still dare not say a google killer but a worthy competitor to google. Isn’t an achievement in itself?

A note of cribbing

The international blogosphere is rife with reviews for this search engine but none of our well-known bloggers (blogs i read in addition to newspapers)
has ever mentioned anything on it. The only person i know and who has ever said anything was kummi. I read his comment somewhere. I suffer from geekophobia since childhood so i absolve myself of any responsibility to post early. Looks like even well known geeky indian bloggers are slowly turning blogosphere into vikatan, kumudam and cinema express. Or maybe a classic case of that occasionall slip of the elephants.

A note of concern

Previewseek exposes a person’s details quite ruthlessly. I just searched for a well-known blogger and it just stopped short of giving his birth horoscope and star.
Google did the same but this classifies the details under each category making it all the more easy to track someone.

Careful folks (this includes me):(

Bloggers’ meet = Bloggers’ meet + 1;

What does one doctor (doctor as in PhD, not the vasool raja types), an engineer, an economics veeramani, a cricketer cum MBA student and a half-baked designer have in common?
Well, nothng except that we were all jobless and hence decided to meet in Barrista, Besant Nagar last Sunday.

Nice fun it was.
Arjuna the doc was kinda formal and cool.
Sambhar the sport was forever cribbing about the uncivlised city-riding by economics veeramani. Special mention has to be made about the Engineer who turned up sincerely inspite of having his MBA exams the next day :D

Arjuna left kinda early. The rest stayed together and amidst the heavy downpour, managed beach sundal, Milagai Bhajji and dinner later on. In between, we also spoke about films, IR’s genius, Life, Jobs, Marriage and such other wonderful topics that 20-somethings are prone to.

On the whole, a very enjoyable meet.

I was the first to reach the venue. Looks like i am also the first one to blog about it inspite of having some vetti officers like Veeramani. Grr…:(

PLAGIARISM

Monday, December 19th, 2005

Writing poems is a risky business;
For plagiarism is a nasty business

Good or bad, i don’t know;
Did i lift? No! No!

Throw flowers or stones, thats fine;
But this is all surely mine.

-isms, -acies and its problems

Monday, December 19th, 2005

Socialism, Capitalism, Taosim, Modernism, Existentialism, and Communism - Man has forever been trying to come up with one theory and one philosophy that would be the perfect solution for all times to come.

Has any one concept or philosophy or intellectual approach has ever given man peace? In my humble opinion, the answer is No. At the end of the day, man has no other option but to surrender to love. Love in all its glory in all possible forms. It happens only when we cross the boundary of the rationale and suspicion and accept the subjectivites and uncertainties of life. Best of all, love can never be a strategy :)
I get irritated when people begin to talk like MBAs and try to solve problems with process, procedures, and systems. “We sould do this way”, “We should adopt this system”, “we should adopt this strategy” or “We should follow this method”.
Guess it comes with reading too much of Operation Research and Algorithms :) The trouble is not the lack of systems. The trouble is because of the systems and because of a flawed human running it.

Lets take one concept. Democracy. What a wonderful concept! Its ‘For the people, by the people and of the people’. So if this is true, a country which practices democracy on a large scale should be greater than all other nations isn’t it?
Ah! that is where the irony is. All that great country can ever talk about is its accomplishments during times when it was ruled by kings :)
All these -ism,ices, scientific discoveries and its cousins are mere tools. Really powerful but tools nevertheless. Having a great system and hence expecting great things is like saying ‘I have parker pen, so i am going to write Nobel prize winning stuff’. Our world is not going to get any better just because of it.

This world is such a mess because of people who had more time for intellect and less time for love.

Let us put aside ur thinking caps and try to be good human beings following whatever philsophies, systems we like. Add a bit of love to it and all will be fine in course of time. This world would do well with a little more love and a little less rules, strategies, philosophies and intellect.

Life goes on

No matter
who gets raped,
Who gets stampeded.

The rich write
about the poor’s plight
either for money
or for killing time.

The ruling party say they are helpless;
The opp. party is always senseless.

But Ganguly’s selection
creates a commotion;
Not just among parliament blokes
Even among blogger folks;
Things work like this
After all, India it is.

‘Its all in the game’
we say without a shame;
‘All is fair in love and war’ they say
A war it is for the poor, each day.

More rains to come,
More “relief” to come.

But Life goes on

Points to Ponder

Sunday, December 18th, 2005

Call this what you may.

Why is that on an average, the gap between what a girl says and thinks is most of the times as high as 180 deg?

In my opinion the only way to know a girl is by her actions and NEVER by her words.

Occasionally i don the role of Agony uncle and i often feel ‘Man, if only i had brains enough, i would first and foremost write a patch to all the guy’s brains so that he compiles and interprets Girls ++ (a language like c++) correctly.

For eg. the words and the meaning to be interpreted are given in braces.

“You are such a nice guy , but…” (You, moron)
“One day our love will win” (Hm, wait for some more years. we’ll see)
“Lets be friends” (Gone case)
“Ayyo naan padikavey illa” (Supera padichirukken - this applies to padipps guys too.)
“You are such a nice guy” after some help.(Ilichavaaya, ipdiye iru)
“Broadminded” (My money will be my money, you money will be our money, ok va?)
“I dont know” (I dont think its going to work out).

If a girl says ‘ivan en best friend’ about a guy and actually does some work for him,
chances are, its not just friendhsip :P (a borderline case at the minimum )

It usually depends on the kind of work done by the girl relative to the work done for all her unambigous friends, greater the work, greater the probability of green signal.

Of course the default line will be usually “Just a friend” till its all official :D

My suggestion for guys is, interpret the signals and decide whether its caution, danger, amber or straight green:)

Any opinions to the contrary?
