To write or not to write
Thursday, February 9th, 2006There are some topics which leaves you completely bamboozled. You are not clear whether to write about it or not - like an out of form batsman not clear whether to move forward or backward to a 150kmph delivery, only to be either plumb in front or lose his timber. But I guess it’s better late than never. This is regarding the Guruvayoor temple controversy. Dummies click here for more.
The point of debate is throwing open the temple gates to people belonging to other religions. Guruvayoor is famous for Lord Krishna and notorious for customs which reeks discrimination. I, for one feel it is wrong to bar entry to people based on religion. It’s sad to see the likes of KJY being denied entry. It was also disturbing to read that they’ve performed a purification ceremony when Vayalar Ravi’s son (born to Christian mother) married within the temple premises. Such practices are deplorable and absolutely shameful.
But, or rather BUT, I am really pissed off that the Congress and Marxists, the epitomes of secularism, have a comment or two about all this. Where were these Marxists when a Muslim woman was raped by her father-in-law and was issued a fatwa which terminated her marriage? Will the Congress condemn the religious conversions which goes on several parts of India in a tone half as strong? What’s the Congress opinion about the trouble KJY had in getting his son baptized in church because he sings in praise of Hindu Gods?
I am not against mistakes being pointed out in Hinduism. Every religion or culture always is in a state of change or evolution. Ancient rules or edicts should be viewed, analysed in the light of present day context and interpreted accordingly.
But the prevailing fashion is to point out ills only in Hinduism and then they can all go and attend Ifthar party during the month of Ramzan, Imranas and Shah Bano notwithstanding. Bull shit!
The religious minorities in India – I know 99% of them are sane, moderate people who just want peace, but they are also guilty of letting the 1% lunatics in their faith to speak on their behalf.
Recently, I read a poster near my home which is basically an invitation to Muslims to congregate and seek reservation in jobs. The congregation was to be held in Kumbakonam. Nothing wrong with that. It’s within their right to assemble and voice their opinions and demand privileges.
But one sentence caught my eye.
“Izhandha urimayai meettka thayakkam edharku?”
Oh really? Can anyone make out a list of all the rights lost by the religious minority in India in the last 50 years? I would like to know more on this… Any help would be highly appreciated.
