Dan Brown sued
Dan Brown has been sued by the authors of The Holy Blood and Holy Grail for appropriation of ideas in his The Da Vinci Code. Phew!
Ever since Da Vinci Code broke best-seller records, this was bound to happen. It was just a matter of when. Looks like Brown was sued last year by some other author too. But I guess this HBHG thing has much more meat to the accusation. I think even one of the characters in Da Vinci Code talks about this book as a reference. But am not sure if Dan Brown has explicitly acknowledged HBHG anywhere.
What makes this case even more peculiar is that HBHG is a research book while Brown’s was popular fiction. One of my friend Madhu has read HBHG and he feels the case would not endure. He also says that HBHG itself was based on some mysterious ancient document called Dossier of Secrets whose credentials HBHG does not evaluate.
Whatever….
But I shudder to imagine what would happen if someone starts to dig all of Deva’s music and starts sueing for copyright violation. I think there will be a separate court instituted just for this purpose. Not that the other music directors are original sigamanis but ‘Thenisai Thendral‘ has made a mark for himself like no other in that arena:)

Oh. Pannitaangala. Hmmm… Even Angels and Demons had an inspiration from somewhere else. As for Da Vinci Code, are they going to sue the movie makers also then? BTW, why did the HBHG author(s) keep quiet all this long? It has been ages since the book came out. They could have sued him much earlier and kept the book from getting to the top of the bestseller list, if they truly wanted to claim the lift-off from their works. To me it looks like they are smelling some money here.

Why not just read a good book and put it aside with the nice effect that it left behind? Sometimes I think we take suing much too seriously, so much infact that it becomes ridiculous at times.
Not saying we all should shut up and support plagiarism but anyway

PK, if you go thru’ the foreword of Da Vinci code and the Q&A section in Dan Brown’s website, he has clearly stated that except for the characters in the novel, rest is based on facts and is true. I don’t know how DVC resembles HBHG but if what Dan Brown has stated are facts, then I don’t think its a problem. As u rightly said, maybe too much money is involved here.

I have read both the books and I did have a feeling while reading Da Vinci Code that it had a lot to do with HBHG. I presumed that Dan Brown would have given due cedit to HBHG. If he hasn’t, it is definitely a valid accusation. But RC has a point about the meaningless wait and money involved.
