Ram,

yr comment deserves an independent and if need be a separate post..
but the crux of EF schumacher's argument is this...

market economy does not sufficiently distinguish primary resources (read from nature) and secondary resources (read man made) the emphasis is more on the numbers which does not take into acount the qualititative aspects...

economics is all about efficiency, cutting costs, increasing profits etc..

but according to EF schumacer this concept has to take into acount factors like environment in which all the economic acitvity takes place.... he calls this meta-economics..

he says the economists while being good at their subject should also know the limitations of economics..

this is what i remember right now...

he also talks about concepts like buddhist economics, intermediate technology etc.. pls do read his "Small is beautiful"

probly i will write more on his in the days to come...

shobana,
thanks..
in that case, run to the nearest landmark or similiar bookstore and grab a copy of "small is beautiful"

soonapaana,
lets just say that i agree with EFS view that infinite growth in GNP in a finite world seems quite absurd to me!!

PK

Great Links.. Good Stuff..

I am not sure if these guys at the opposite end of the spectrum. T Friedman talks about flat world and the globalization tide.. on the other hand Schumacher talks about 'small is beautiful' and why growth is not always good..

Why do they have to be either / or? Schumacher's principles applies even in the globalized world.. In fact, it is all more relevant.. 1. Urbanization is not due to 'flat world'
2. Automation & Mass production is not due to 'flat world'...

Your thoughts..

Thomas Friedman is a right-wing pro-war pro-genocide MNC-worshipping pig. Not surprisingly, we Indians hold him in high esteem :)
