ARR and his growing music
I write this even as i listen to the latest sensation from ARR - “Munbe Vaa en Anbe vaa.” from JoK
Any feedback on ARR’s album will not be complete without someone mentioning this, “His music grows on you. You might not like it the first time but you will like it after a listening a few times.” Far too many people have said this. Even i had this notion for sometime.
I consider myself a gyaanasooniyam in music so i am not going to debate on that.
Maybe i am wrong or just that i’m getting older.
But i’ve come to think that ARR’s evergreen songs are numbers which people kinda liked even the first time. Of course i liked it even more once i got the nuances and the subtle touches of ARR.
But i’m yet to come across an ARR song which people did not like the first time but which went on to become a classic hit and which lingered in the audience’s mind for long.
For eg.
Roja - i liked “Chinna Chinna Asai” and “Vellai Mazhai” even when i listened to it the first time.
Bombay - “Kannalane”, “Uyire”
On the other hand how abt listening to ‘Nee siricha deewana… Hulla Kulla’ now. which i liked then after repeated listening? I am not sure.
Minsara kanavu - Vennilave, Manamadhurai.
Kandukondein - “Sandhana thendralil”, “Kannamoochi”, “Enge enadhu kavidhai”….
But i dont think people will prefer listening to ‘Saahi aahi aahiyai Magnet vishiyai’ dance number with Ajit now, which i learned to like after a learning curve.
If you think i’m talking abt just pure melody, i’m not. I always enjoyed “Chayya Chayya” and the likes.
Alaipayudhe - Snehidhane, Pachai nirame, Kadhal sadugudu, Eano Oruvan.
On the other hand i dont think i’d listen to ‘September maadham’ now.
The list is by no means exhaustive.
The point is, one can develop a liking for any song by repeated listenings.
Some songs can even be popular during the movie release but it will simply not stand the test of time. But as time goes on, we also tend to unlearn/forget our liking.
How many can listen to ‘Mukkabla’ now? I can’t for sure. But i can listen to ‘Ennavale’ from the same movie all day. And guess what i liked ‘Ennavale’ even as i listened to it the first time.
Only the best will linger in your mind and stir emotions and bring back memories. And how do we find out that category?
Oh! its obvious the moment you listen to it.

Too many bloggers are trying to hide their dissapointment with the JKK album by hoping the music grows on them. Even godfather was better than this with some groovy stuff here and there, though on the whole it was also dissapointing.

i have felt the same not only with ARR but also some of IR’s songs n that of other musicians also…like some days back i heard this song “kallukulle vandha eeram enna” frm manidhanin marupakkam.iv heard that song quite a no of times previously but didnt find anything spl abt it.but after repeated listening it seemed to be simple gud number….
Inspite of the song growing on u at the very first time u listen to it or over repeated listening, simple melodies stay in mind for a long period than even the most popular fast beat ,for eg manmadha rasa(which anyway was not my fav even during its release)could be heard everywhere at the time of its release and even months after the movie was off the theatres…but now none could even venture to listen the first two lines..

shobana,
i agree with you, but for that the basic tune/melody should be there.
september madham ellam worstu songs which were nevertheless popular during Alaipayuthe release time.

the main diff. is this …tunes that you imm like are those that are not much of experimentation in it.. just the usual stuff and elements that make a song instant hit ..like all those HJ’s !
But some songs you take time to settle with the style.
For example: Thazhuvuthu Nazhuvuthu took time to grow… was new to me ..the style !!where’as Majja Majja of JOK i liked it imm. coz the style im settled with it already …
Its like one song Jazz, next song carnatic, next melody etc etc !! .. so it takes time to switch.
infact the moview iruvar took time to grow on me to appreciate the scenes !!..
Like the Worldspace ad…theres more to hear. not only the usual stuff !!

sreekrishnanv,
welcome here.
as i said i am not very knowledgeable in music.
Having said that, there has to be some inherent stuff in the song without which no matter how many times u listen to it, u may not appreciate it 2/3 yers down the line.
u unlearn it as fast as u learn it.
ofcourse, this does not happen to good songs.
it starts from lieable number to your favorite number.
Iruvar i liked all the songs almost except hello mister edhir katchi.

ARR has done good music. No doubt. I am happy that he is maturing and having his own style. IR is a university for music. ARR may become another in the future.
