I think they started sometime in early 80's. Our politicians should mature and think about some alternative way of protest. It is very difficult to change the mentality of old politicians. I do not see any changes in the near by future. Also, most of the politicians all over the world thrive by mere publicity and stunts. Ours are in no way exception and have their own style. Inspite of being a boy from a lower middle class family, I have spent many a guilty sleepless night thinking about the "chotu's" in my hostel who used to serve us food in the mess halls !! These kids were younger than me and everytime they used to say "bhaiya, roti!" and toss one on my plate, I used to feel bad. Sad thing is by the end of my first year in college I somehow got used to it!! Your idea of 1:1 mentoring is great.
