maduraikaaran
even though i am a madurai kaaran by birth, i've hardly lived there.
Thideernagar police station is what i saw on the madurai virudhunagar highway (near the overbridge after the former thiruvalluvar bus stand)..
thanks for the info

MSP.
etymology is always interesting :)

The kaaranappeyar is very interesting. Some place-names also have a misleading spin too. My favourite example:

A place outside Madurai city (now pretty much a suburb) is OomachchikuLam. A fair assumption would be it drew its name from a pond/tank which was named after some mute woman. Quite the contrary:

Apparently in the time of a great drought, this was the only tank that didn't dry up and proved to be the the solace for the town. So it became the 'oor mechchia kuLam'

Koothiyaar gundu got its name because the king who ruled madurai used to house his favorite 'keep' in a forte built in this place. If you goto this place even today you will see this forte. It is also believed that there is 'suranga paadhai' from this forte connecting it to the thirumalai naayakar mahal.

And thideer nagar is not the name of a police station. It is the name of locality outside madurai. again it is kaarana peyar as the nagar developed quickly in no time 'thideer nu'.

> Koothiyaar gundu

- Of all the names, this one takes the cake.

Six yrs ago, I got a new job in UK and I relocated to that place almost immediately. But I was very embarassed to tell the name of the place to anyone.. the name of the town is Poole.

When we were living in Madurai "Kaattu Raja" was our gardener; "Thiru Vaettai" was our electrician. ;-)

Come to think of it Parsi names like Cement wallah, Ronnie screw wallah, Daruwallah are not too far off either. Lots of English names like 'Smith' are also derived from professions.
