Am i a traditionalist?
Going by this, people might even call me aadi vaasi.
But hey my phone works just fine. I also realised one important benefit of owing a phone as mine.
Today, some team members decided to play prank on one of our colleagues. They simply stole his cell phone and had him searching all over the place for like 30 mins. He was literally sweating - his was a very expensive phone. I dare anyone to try such pranks with me… hehehe
Not to mention, i remember most of my contacts list by heart and i can call even from a public phone booth (another endangered species).
Cell phones are getting more and more important with each passing day in India. The article is right in pointing it out as a symbol of status and expression. Even in our office, atleast half an hour was spent today on the merits and demerits of buying an iPhone from US and having it unlocked here. Cracking iPhones have become something like a cottage industry now. It’s only a matter of time that these guys start demanding tax sops for the kind of service and innovation they offer to the society.
It’s only a matter of time before Nokia becomes our national gadget too…whatever!..
EVen i too sometimes feel i should catch up with times and should go for a trendier phone. But hey, style is not just about owning a phone. What about what we talk?
Then i decide,’ Nama pesura vetti mokkai calls kum.. junk SMS kum idhu podhum’. The Aadhi vaasi in me has been winning so far.. but not sure till how long…

Here are my points:
1) Telephone dept was/is screwed - Good, they have been screwing us the last several years. Pathetic service, customer + regular, noone answerable, corruption etc. Thanks to Cellphone, those days are gone! I am happy
2) Dangers of cellphone - I see a lot of towers even in residential areas so close to each other. It might be a major health hazard. Not sure why nobody cares about it.
3) Cellphone use while driving - Dangerous for the driver + all the rest…!!
4) Cellphone cameras - We all know how they are being used! Dangerous. for privacy..!!
Me - I don’t like fancy phones. I need a phone and I have one that I use to communicate..aka talk! That’s it.!! beginning July-1, Hands free is mandatory in California, so I have to buy a bluetooth headset…that’s it!!
I remember a joke. I was in India last year and during a train journey..I noticed the guys sitting to my left / right and in the front were all talking on the cellphones. I took out mine…just started to talk about kadalai paruppu, Ulutham paruppu etc..etc..so Loud…that everyone looked at me and laughed….I had a laugh myself !!

PK,
There are lots of useful features now. I can list atleast two for you
1. Photos. You do not carry your camera everywhere, but you carry your cell phone
Sometimes you get to take amazing photos when you least expect it
2. Entertainment. You dont need a next seat passenger when you go to virudhungar. And even if the sleeping beauty switches off the light and you are not feeling sleepy, you have good ways of entertaining yourself. Music, Internet, blog, news all in one.

I was a ‘adhivaasi’ too until 4 mths ago. I had an age old phone. my simple requirement of a cell is that i shud be able to talk.. i don’t care abt the inbuilt camera/browser/dvd player/microwave oven etc.
having said that, i bought a blackberry 4 mths back coz it was avbl here at almost the same price as my ancient one and i had the craving need to chk my mails on the move.
i don’t even remember my wife’s number by heart… no way i can remember the entire contact list. :))

Looks like my Samsung Blackjack II makes me The Ultimate Work Warrior !!!.
Maybe I should openly flaunt it the next time I attend an Interview .

Hi PK,
You can’t call me a traditionalist. If I start changing (exchanging) phones, I change 3 in a year. Take a gap of 2 years and then change (Exchange) again.

Ferrari,
I agree with your point on photos. Neraya samayam, i felt like ‘if only i had a good camera with me now’… aana en camera vai thookaradhum onnu dhaan station la porter a velaiku poradhum onnu dhaan
there are some instances when an SLR is an overkill..
aana andha lens interchangeability ellam pazhagi pochu…this reminds me of another stuff i wanted to write

seriously, i think we need to draw a balance.. like in everything else
We can’t run after technology for ever.. at the same time one should not lag behind the times as well..

Prabu,
Probably they thought the name will take some fame from ‘Blackberry’.
Anyways, this is a very good gprs smartphone. Has GPS too. I use all its features actively except playing games !.
Compared to the Blackberry , its internet speed is good. I often use google maps and check prices/reviews while doing my shopping.
Only grouse is it doesn’t have voice dialing - This feature helps a lot while driving or avoids digging through contact lists.

Mahesh
Thanks for the suggestion. Will keep this in mind and see if this or any of its variants are available in India
