Jallipaedias - make them say ‘I dont know’
I am seen as the angry young man of my team. Actually, I do a remarkable job of containing my rage when people without even the most rudimentary knowledge on a topic go on and on for ever during official meetings as if they’d written a paper on it. Sadly, the Indian IT industry is infested with people who just can’t say, ‘I don’t know’.
It would be appropriate if someone can identify the jalli parties aka jallipaedias and make them write “I am sorry, I don’t know” 108 times as imposition, just like the school days. Most of the times they open their mouths when they don’t have to!
I don’t care if someone starts a blog and write whatever crap they want like me but bullshitting on work related stuff in official meetings is sacrilege to me. Invariably, these jallipaedias also develop critical soft skills like back biting, getting inputs from others and projecting as if they’d known since their childhood - right in front of the person who first provided the information.
I was cribbing about this to my friend yesterday and my only consolation was that I am not alone. My friend was recounting his days with the world’s biggest software company’s Hyderabad office - not exactly pleasant memories for him. That was his dream company and yet he quit in six months.
He also gave a parting gyaan. ‘In any Indian IT company, the chances of finding a genuine, open minded, clear thinking person in a team is five percent. If your team has more, consider yourself lucky.” I thought about my team and could count six (including me) out of a possible twenty one. Whoa, maybe I should not get too angry. Lucky me!

interesting topic… however, i’d have to disagree on the generalization that such people exist only in IT companies… this is a phenomenon which is common in pretty much every walk of life, every professional stream, and so on… Maybe, the probability of finding such people in IT is possibly higher…
dont you think so?
but yes, have to agree on the point that such supposedly-know-it-alls annoy the crap out of me too.

ALso one has to be very careful with soft skillers. If you share any idea with them be prepared to be stolen from you and presented in a meeting which you might aso attend. Softskiller will ice it so well with maane thene and also invariably they are gifted with acting skills which nadigar thilakam will envy. Learn to live with them, I am sure we can outlive them.

Well, those Jallipaedias as you call it, may think that’s the easiest & fastest way to reach the corporate ladder — bcoz — first it works most of the time and second people like you (who get used) I think don’t express this attitude of theirs openly that often and confront them.
I don’t know… I haven’t seen this kinda politics in a long time in my company as it is very small in size.

arun,
well…there are two reasons for me mentioning IT companies
and i’ve noticed the emphasis is more fluff than stuff and it goes down as communication skills or whatever which i think is crap.

He spoke with such conviction and poise. i admit i don’t have such poise after 10 minutes… indha moojiku poise ellam oru keda is my attitude..
If only i had explained ‘Adhaan yeah yeah.. i thought so’ nu tu vera innoru meeting la page rank pathi Larry Page kooda pesa mudiyadha alavukku adichu viduvaanunga!
Another team mate wanted a car for 7 lakhs but somewhere somehow ‘calculated’ the EMI to be 9K for 2 years for the 7 lakhs

Yes, such trait can be more attributed to IT industry only where your tongue wins over your brain! I think that is also a trend imbibed from America (just like lot of other shity things).

True PK, but thats how the world survives. idhukku pinnadi enna reasonnnu paartha its all due to the fierce competion and the means that one has to take to survive in some way or the other.
But the trend is changing these days, I think youngsters are more open to admit their mistakes and learn from it. Atleast I do, theriyadhunna theriyadhunnu solliduvaen.
Nice post!

PK romba sari. As Ravi said ‘tongue wins over your brain’, it has become part of IT.

PK…
Over the years.. I have seen this trend in many instances..
When they are shallow.. you hear the phrase”you know.. you know”
occuring in the speech so often..
When they run out of stuff and when we explain in detail.. they respond
with “I know.. I know.. ”
or…
“My point exactly”
or
“that is what I was trying to convey..”
or
“You said it”
The clients with who we work soon are able discern them easily.
In the end that is what matters..
So ignore them and keep going..
