நம்ம எதிர் வீட்டு நண்பர் பெயர் மாதிரி இருக்கலாம். ஆனால் Freakonomics படித்தவர்களுக்கு தெரியும் இவர் சாதாரண ஆள் இல்லை என்று. சுதிர் வெங்கடேஷ் கொலம்பியா பல்கலைக் கழக சமூகவியல் பேராசிரியர்.

இவரது ஆராய்ச்சி ஆர்வங்கள் கொஞ்சம் விவகாரமான வகை:
கறுப்பின Gang போதை வியாபாரம், சிகாகோ மற்றும் நியூயார்க் நகர கணக்கில் வராத / underground பொருளாதாரம், நியூ யார்க் நகர பாலியல் தொழிலாளர்களின் வாழ்க்கை etc.

Freakonomics ல் ஒரு chapter தலைப்பு:
ஒரு கடை நிலை போதை வியாபார ஊழியன் ஏன் அவனது அம்மாவுடன் இருக்கிறான்? (குடும்ப பாசம் / கலாச்சாரம் அல்ல காரணம்).

சிகாகோ நகர கறுப்பின போதை வியாபாரிகள்…அவர்களது குடும்பங்கள், அவர்களது வாழ்க்கை, தொழில் தர்மம், பாதுகாப்பு இதெல்லாம் இன்டர்நெட் இல் ஆராய்ச்சி செய்யம் மேட்டர் இல்லை. நிஜமாகவே பக்கத்தில் இருந்து கவனிக்க வேண்டும். பக்கத்தில் இருந்து சாதாரணமாய் கவனிக்க இது கத்திரிக்காய் வியாபாரம் அல்ல. இதற்கெல்லாம் செம ‘தில்’ வேண்டும். கொஞ்சம் அசந்தால் சங்கு ஊதி விடுவார்கள்.

அவர் சொல்வதில் முக்கியமான விஷயம், போதை வியாபரத்தின் Organization மற்றும் Compensation structure கிட்டத்தட்ட McDonald ஐ ப்போல தான் இருக்கிறது என்கிறார்.

இந்தியாவில் இது போன்ற ஆய்வுகள் மிகவும் முக்கியம் என்பது என் கருத்து. நம்ம ஊரில் பொதுவாகவே Ethnographic research செய்ய ஆளே இல்லை என்று எப்போதோ ஒரு IIT பேராசிரியர் என்னிடம் மிகவும் குறைபட்டுக்கொண்டார்.
இதே போன்ற ஆய்வுகள் சென்னை, மும்பை போன்ற நகரங்களில் நடந்தால் இன்னும் சுவாரசியமான விஷயங்கள் வெளிப்படும் என்று தான் தோன்றுகிறது. காலத்திற்கேற்ப சட்ட திட்டங்கள் உருவாக மிகவும் உதவியாக இருக்கும் என்றும் தோன்றுகிறது.

சுதிர் வெங்கடேஷ் பற்றி மேலும் அறிய Sudhir Venkatesh என்று கூகிள் செய்யவும். அவரது வலைப்பதிவு.

Sudhir Venkatesh

Sounds like the name of my neighbor in the next flat. If only you’ve read Freakonomics you would know him that he is no ordinary kuppusamy. Sudhir Venkatesh is a professor of Socialogy in Columbia University.

Sudhir’s research interests are at best troublesome:
The economics of a Chicago black gang’s drug business, the underground economies in the cities of Chicago and New York, sex workers in New york city etc.

Sudhir was featured in Freakonomics for his seminal work on the black gangs and their drug trade in the apartment projects of Chicago. He also chronicles their relationship with their community, the organization hierarchy – from Board of Directors to the street peddler and how much each person makes per month. All this makes for riveting read and one of the best chapters in Freakonomics.

It is not possible to research this kinda stuff with the Internet. He should’ve come pretty close to being an obituary photo quite a few times during his research. He concludes the main question, ‘Why do drug dealers live with their moms?’ with the answer that they cannot afford to live alone. The money for an entry level worker in an illegal trade is much lower than the official minimum wages. Hence they live with their moms. He also says the org. structure in the local gang branch is similar to that of a McDonald franchise.

Unfortunately, we do not see works of this nature happening in India. One IIT-B professor was lamenting about the fact that for a nation of a billion people, we hardly have any Ethnographic research happening in India.
Imagine someone undertaking a study of this nature in Kasimedu, Pudhupettai in Chennai and in some areas in Mumbai.
We will have some amazing insights about our own yet unknown city. Such research is very critical in informing the change of times and the need for new measures – in the legal, political, social, business and economical space to address the situations.

Do a google search for ‘Sudhir Venkatesh’ to find out more about him. I am sure you will find a wiki, his official website, a couple of his book promotions podcast, his blog and much more.

I am learning quite a few things in the last few weeks and I should thank the internet, the US media, and specifically Youtube for bringing to me all this and much more. It’s bad that people who don’t know English miss out on all this!

I hope someone comes up with more serious videos on tamil and make it available on the web.

Right now what we have as tamil videos are essentially Vadivelu comedies and film songs. I am not saying those need to be removed. But there should be something which caters to the awareness angle as well. Maybe Kizhakku can come up with something to fill this void.

To say that Dr. Doom was right would be an understatement. And he is predicting bank runs on a scale unheard of before.
