While Cameron is justifiably proud of the groundbreaking special effects, the actual contents of the film -- the story, the characters, the dialogue -- are disappointingly mediocre.

Fun with 3D experience, well, it's above fun. It feels like you have stepped into an imaginary world, like World of Warcraft (you will have to play to know what I mean.. just reading about it won't cut). I don't know whether you have watched Avatar in 3D, if you haven't then do.

"I’ve never seen a movie like this in my life" reviews in IMDB -- may be too much off the chart. Same old and tried story in a different wrapper. But, I've to say, it was something surreal after we came out of the 3D experience. A new way to see movies. Note to myself: research on IMAX stock.

I give "A-" for 3D format and a screenplay that elevates the experience with 3D, but for story, not that much. There were also few stupid holes in the movie, but, hey 3D makes it fade away -- just like logic holes in a Thalaivar movie. :)

Couple of weeks back, i saw 'The Prestige'.. and two years back i saw 'The Departed'.. or for that matter 'The Duel' - the first movie of a one Spielberg shot way back on a shoe string budget... I am impressed with those...

I know a few tamil directors who have painted an entire village for a single song sequence... i dont want to insult JC..but still...

As a rule of thumb, I believe any ideal work of art should contain only what is essential and nothing extra... To me a new language etc does not add much..

If I know whats going to happen in the end (not to mention the othaiku othai fights)... no matter how grand it is..leaves me a tad disappointed...

I beg to differ! If you consider a good storyline alone to be the basis of good cinema, then Avatar is not exceptional. But the sheer amount of technical work that has gone in and other efforts (creating a language just for the movie etc..) makes it pretty phenomenal. I watched it yesterday in 3D and I was totally impressed.
